Politics Shouldn’t Matter

We receive thank you notes and emails from troops to pass along to sponsors every day. You’d think after reading thousands of notes, we’d be used to them. Some are touching, some are funny… sometimes it’s easy to see that Mom never convinced the sender that knowing their way around a keyboard would come in handing some day.

Lately we’re seeing more and more notes that mention that the soldier is grateful and surprised at the support, because the news they receive has them convinced their fellow Americans no longer support them. We can only imagine how much that must hurt every day, much less during the holidays. Check out the first thank you over in the right column for just one example.

We believe most people agree that our troops deserve our support, no matter what someone’s politics. Our men and women in uniform have pledged to do their duty no matter what. And that’s what they’re doing, in Iraq, and Afghanistan and Korea and dozens of other posts around the world.

We hope you’ll find it in your heart to show our troops that despite what they read and watch and hear, they are not forgotten, and Santa Claus has no political agenda.

We wish all of you the happiest of holidays, and thank you all for putting smiles on the faces of so many soldiers far from home.

Photo of the Month Winner Jason Colon

Jason Colon (in the box) and his coworker Armando Muscaritolo are all smiles after receiving a care package stuffed with goodies from New Hampshire supporter Bruce Boyer.

Congratulations to Jason Colon, our last photo of the month winner of the year. Jason was really happy to receive a package big enough to share from big-hearted sponsor Bruce Boyer. Jason is from North Carolina, and serving in the Air Force in Afghanistan. His hobbies include baseball, computer games, cooking, fishing, reading and watching movies. His dream car is a Toyota Tacoma TRD 4x4, “loaded.” His hero is his Dad, because he set goals, and “achieved them and then some.” What he misses most from home is his wife and kids – watching his kids grow up, and the normal day to day things most parents take for granted, like watching them play sports or attending a school event. And of course all the special events and holidays. In addition to spending the holidays away from home, Jason will also miss celebrating his birthday December 12 with his family, so Happy Birthday, Jason!

Jason’s Thank You to His Sponsor

Dear Bruce:

We got your package the other day! Wow, you really filled it up. There was not one thing that we did not like, perfect choice of selection. I sent a postcard to Treats for Troops, I guess it will get forwarded to you. (Note from TFT: Yes, Jason, it will; all thank you notes from the troops to their sponsors go through Treats for Troops for security reasons)

Thank you again.
Jason

Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Birthdays

We have 73 soldiers registered with our Foster-A-Soldier Program celebrating their birthday Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. We think birthdays and other personal holidays are some of the toughest times to be away from home – so having a birthday around the holidays must be a double bummer for a soldier half a world away. If you’d like to send one of our Christmas birthday boys or girls a wonderful surprise for the holidays, email groupgift@treatsfortroops.com and put Christmas Birthday in your subject line.

Units and Groups Hoping for Holiday Support

Treats for Troops has a number of units and groups who’ve humbly asked for whatever holiday support we can provide. We’d love to make sure they all get a visit from Santa, so instead of profiling a particular unit, here are brief highlights from some of them. If we don’t have a photo, it’s probably because the unit doesn’t have access to the Internet, so please don’t hold that against them. You don’t have to provide enough for the entire group; whatever you’d like to send can be ear-marked for the unit of your choice. Our Group Gift Department is in constant contact with our registered units, and can tell you who most needs Santa to load up the sleigh and do a fly by. To help support a group or unit, email groupgift@treatsfortroops.com and put Holiday Group in the subject line. Let the Group Gift Coordinator know if you’re interested in a particular group, or just want to help.

Many Units and Groups Need Support

Our Group Gift Department is in personal contact with group representatives, and can help you select a group that could really use support. Groups available range in size from as few as six people to as large as five hundred. If you’d like to designate a package to go to one of these groups, send an e-mail to unitsupport@treatsfortroops.com and put Unit or Group Support in your subject line.

Still Time to Register Soldiers for the Holidays

There’s still time to register with our Foster-A-Soldier Program, and be eligible to receive packages and messages of support from caring individuals, groups and organizations. Soldiers who register will also receive their own personal TFT ID they can share with family and friends, to make it quick and easy for them to go shopping in our TFT Gift Shops. Soldiers can register themselves online, or be registered by anyone who has their correct military address. Although it’s not required, we encourage troops to complete the personal profile, so sponsors have a better idea of the kinds of treats that will bring the biggest smiles. Registration is fast, easy and free. To register, visit our Military Registration Center.

16-Hour Day Brightener

Dear Dennis:

Thank you very much for the treat box; this has been a busy month for us, we recently started working 16 hour days and I've started feeling tired and depressed. You box perked me right up and help the entire section; we are going to have a movie night tonight and your treats will be passed around.

Thank you for caring, we see so much in the news against us being here that it gets depressing, again thank you for letting me know someone still cares about us.

Thanks again,
Ron

Brother Sends Birthday Chocolates

Dear Micki:

Thank you so much for getting me some chocolate for my Birthday. They were delicious and I was able to share them with others too! I wasn't sure who these came from but I remembered you had said that you sent me something from these guys. My Birthday was uneventful and quiet. I spent the day as usual at work. After 14 hours of work, I went back to the dorm so I could rearrange the room in preparation for two more roommates. Yes, 4 people are going to share a 10X10 room. Yuck :) Hopefully you both are almost finished with the house and are getting ready to enjoy winter and settle down for a white Christmas. I really miss the holidays with all the leaves changing and snow falling and such. Those were the days. Hopefully we can all get together in England! Still not sure about the assignment yet but should find out in December. If it is a go, then I will put in my retirement paperwork. Hope to you talk to you soon.

Thanks again,
Lil' Bro
